When you insert a USB flashdrive or external hardrive into your PC, it shows up as a removeable drive. Here's an example:
Let's say you were to open a photo or a document stored in your USB flashdrive. The file is opened from within your flashdrive. If you were to make changes to your document, it is saved into the same file in your USB flashdrive. If you unplug the USB flashdrive, all the content that reside in it will disappear from your PC - as the PC fails to access the USB flashdrive.
If there are issues with the USB flashdrive, let's say it gets corrupted or becomes faulty, then the issue is specific to the USB flashdrive and unrelated to your PC. It is possible that the USB port on your PC is faulty, therefore it is unable to read the USB flashdrive on the connected port. However, if your USB flashdrive fails to be read on all the USB ports on your PC, then it will be an issue with the flashdrive itself.
This is a similar concept for Citrix. Users login to their Citrix login page (https://connect.onenet.co.nz) and from there access their Citrix Desktop over the internet. In the Citrix Desktop, you can redirect a local resource, such as a USB flashdrive on your machine. Click the black drop down bar and click on Preferences:
Then click on File Access and select "Read and Write":
You should then find your local resources redirected as "Local Disk" (with your computer's name in the name) shown on your Citrix Desktop's explorer view:
When you access the drives, it should also show something like this in the address bar:
If you see \\Client or \\tsclient, then it is referencing your local drive on your machine.
Things to note:
- As you're accessing the contents of your local resources over the internet, this means that your internet speed will be the bottleneck. If you were to open a 1GB file, such as a video, it will essentially need to download that over the internet, i.e transferring the file from your local drive to the Citrix Desktop. There will be cases where accessing contents are slow and that depends on your internet connection, among other things.
- If you have issues with your local disks on your machine, they will likewise have issues in the Citrix Desktop.
